Where's The Snow?
ARTICLE ORIGINALLY APPEARED AT

I'm not complaining one bit, because I don't play in the snow--I either drive in it or shovel it. I live in Tahoe not because of the skiing but because of the small-town atmosphere, the quiet (most of the year) and the sheer beauty of the place. However, it's been pretty darn cold--last week the high temperature never went above freezing, and the lows were well into the single digits.
Truth to tell, I'd rather have the snow than the cold temperatures. Our Tudor-style home with its tall ceilings and great room layout is normally very cold--wonderful most of the year but definitely sweater-mandatory in winter. Snowy conditions usually mean lows in the 20s, not the single digits, and I can handle that.
The weather next weekend is forecast to be so nice that I might actually ride the Honda Gold Wing motorcycle down to Sacramento next Saturday for the Sacramento Public Library Foundation "Authors On The Move" fundraiser! "Authors On The Move" is a gourmet dinner where some 30 authors circulate from table to table during dinner to mingle with the guests and benefactors. This will be my second appearance and it's great fun for me. Riding the bike in early February will make it even sweeter!
January is usually not very snowy in Lake Tahoe, and it's only a matter of time before the snow starts flying again. February and March are usually brutal, and last year the last measurable snowfall up here was June 12! I've lived in Lake Tahoe for over 10 years now and I've seen snow every month of the year here.
Another big benefit of the rather mild conditions has been a hot real estate market. Usually winter is a big down season for real estate, but not this year. Folks who reserve hotel rooms or rental properties 6 months in advance and then come up for skiing find rather poor conditions on the slopes, so they spend more time looking at real estate. It's definitely a buyer's market out there--relatively low interest rates and big inventories mean there are bargains even up here in Lake Tahoe. My real estate agent wife Diane has been amazingly busy for late January.
Another shameless plug: if you're interested in looking at real estate on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, drop Diane an e-mail at diane@dianebrown.info. Do it before Memorial Day and you'll get an incredible deal. From lakeshore mansions to ski condos and everything in between, you'll find whatever you'd like up here.

It's the end of January 2007, and we haven't had any snow up here in Lake Tahoe for over 3 weeks. There is just 1-2 inches of snow on the ground outside. The snow that was in the forecast for this week has gone away. Although it's certainly cold enough to make snow, the ski area operators must be cursing the dry conditions.
