Dale Brown Interview With: Peter Anthony Holder
When a former pilot turns his hand to thrillers you can take their authenticity
for granted. His writing is exceptional and the dialogue, plots and characters
are first-class... far too good to be missed.'

The Picture We Waited 34 Years To Get

[MEGAFORTRESS.COM image] Last week I attended my brother Jim's change of command ceremony, when he took command of Second Squadron, Sixteenth Cavalry Regiment at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Second Squadron is an armored officer training battalion, where newly commissioned officers from the U.S. Army, Marines, and many foreign armies train to lead armored platoons. When Jim attended this very same unit in 1990, he trained only in the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank, with ancillary training in the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Today, officers learn how to lead armored platoons composed of Abrams and Bradleys plus Humvees and Stryker combat vehicles.

This reflects a change from Cold War-era doctrine which prepared armored officers to fight a massive tank land battle in Europe. Now, the Army is expected to fight in many different locations, including cities, so the training reflects the need to learn to lead platoons in combat in many different terrain.

As inspiring and exciting as it was to see my baby brother take command of an Army battalion, the real treat was getting the Francis Brown clan together again. This was the first time our family has been in the same place together since my sister Debbie's wedding on Grand Island, New York in 1974!

Less than a day after the picture was shot, we were scattered again: Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Arkansas, and now Kentucky. However short the visit was, it was a time we'll not soon forget.
