Say Hi To The Neighbors!
ARTICLE ORIGINALLY APPEARED AT

We had a spectacular summer. We got a lot of smoke from California wildfires, but fire season was fairly quiet in Nevada. Even so, we had time to take the boat out on the lake just twice. We do year-round schooling, so my son stayed busy; and although I didn't work as hard as I should have over the summer on the new book, I did work.
My wife's real estate business is slow in a down economy, but that doesn't mean she can stop marketing, so she stayed busy as well.
No big motorcycle trips this summer. The Street Vibrations motorcycle rally in Virginia City was 30 degrees warmer than last year, and exponentially wilder, but somewhat tempered by the increased police presence (and for the first time, the appearance of SWAT officers) because of fear of biker gang retaliation for the murder of a Hell's Angels leader a few months ago. But except for riding to the airport or a few buzzes around the Lake, no big bike excursions.
We're getting our first shot of winter-like weather this week, so we're switching the mindset to winter. The high temp just touched 40 degrees today, and the wind chill is forecast to get into single digits for the next two nights. We got a dusting of snow last night here at lake level and all the way down into the Carson Valley. My brother Ken is finished putting about 300 feet of insulation on my heating system pipes; I just signed the snow removal contract for this season; and we're installing heaters on the roof valleys to try to prevent the massive ice dams of last season.
And look what else we got this morning: a visit from a momma brown bear and her two cubs. For some reason Tahoe bears like my neighbor's yard--maybe they're frightened of my Golden Retriever's land mines in my back yard, or they don't like the wind chimes on my back deck--they tend to drive me a little crazy now and then too.
My plans for this fall: finish the novel, start work on #22, maybe take a few RV trips up and down the California coast, do a few upgrades to the avionics in the Aztec, and try to stop fretting about the credit collapse and the stock market.
And, of course, blog every week. Without fail!

Yes, yes, I know, it's been six weeks since my last Blog entry. I'm cranking hard on the new novel; I referee two or three AYSO soccer games a week; I try to fly once a week; and I fill in as my son's tutor now and then--and, oh yeah, I've got a novel that's overdue. Busy, busy, busy.
