The crash in Clarence Center
ARTICLE ORIGINALLY APPEARED AT

The crash in Clarence Center is horrible and was completely preventable.
Ice is one of the most deadly threats to aviation. Ice completely changes the shape of the wings and makes flight impossible, even for gliding. The planes have anti-icing and de-icing equipment but if ice builds up on unprotected surfaces there's nothing to be done.
I hate to blame the dead but the pilots should have aborted the approach and diverted somewhere else, even if it meant flying all the way back to Newark. They had a responsibility to their passengers, not the company or to their schedule, and should have realized how dangerous it was to proceed into bad weather.
